The local beef market
  • 20% of beef produced is consumed in New Zealand (the local market)
  • Export market is the dominant market for cattle, beef prices in the local market determined by export prices
  • Carcass weights required for local market (210-220 kg) are lighter than for the export market (270-320 kg)
  • Local beef market is expected to increase due to population and tourism growth
  • The trend in New Zealand has been a decline in red meat consumption and an increase in white meat consumption
